Despite the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, patients are reluctant to use medical chatbots. The authors present an AI chatbot designed to resolve this issue, which reminds patients to repurchase their medication and provides medical or marketing information. A large-scale field experiment is conducted via an online pharmacy with 5000 patients randomly assigned to one of four chatbots with disclosed transactional, disclosed relational, undisclosed transactional, and undisclosed relational AI. The study finds that patients are reluctant to develop a relationship with disclosed AI and relational AI has a negative moderating effect. However, privacy-sensitive patients with sexual health problems are more likely to appreciate the disclosed AI. Interestingly, privacy-sensitive patients favor disclosed relational AI that seeks to build a trusting relationship.
