The amount of data in the world has been growing exponentially, so efficient, affordable and reliable data storage, e.g., cloud storage, is necessary. Suppose that data is stored in a storage unit, such as a server. The most intuitive way to ensure the reliability of the availability of data, to avoid data loss when the storage unit crashes, is to store copies of the same data in several (say n) storage units –this is called replication. Using this approach, the amount of data stored is n times that of the original data. This ratio–called the storage overhead–is a measure of the cost incurred. Is it possible to have any other data storage method that ensures that the data can still be reliably recovered, even in the event that some of the storage servers have failed, and yet has a lower storage overhead than the replication approach? In this talk, we shall see how ideas from elementary mathematics can be used to address this problem in real-life applications.
報告人簡介：
Ling San (中文名:林杉) 教授，新加坡國家科學院院士，新加坡南洋理工大學常務副校長兼教務長，博士生導師。Ling San 教授在英國劍橋大學獲得本科和碩士學位，在加州大學伯克利分校獲得數學博士學位。Ling San 教授 2013-2017年擔任新加坡數學會主席，2013年至今擔任新加坡國家科學院副主席，2016-2017年擔任東南亞數學會主席。2003年獲新加坡國家科學獎(團隊) ，2013年獲新加坡共和國總統公共服務勛章(銀牌)，2014年當選新加坡國家科學院院士。2022年8月開始至今擔任新加坡國家自然基金首席科學顧問，新加坡政府科學顧間。他還曾在加州大學伯克利分校(University ofCalifornia at Berkeley)、法國國家信息與自動化研究所(INRIA)、以色列理工學院(The Technion)、麥格理大學(Macquarie University)和漢陽大學(anyang University)等機構擔任訪問學者。Ling San 教授主要研究編碼、密碼、分布式存儲、分布式計算。特別是在有限環的代數編碼理論，利用編碼構造分布式存儲方案等方面的研究取得了豐碩的成果，受到了同行的廣泛關注和引用。是國際著名專家。主持了新加坡國家重大科學研究項目。
